Configuration of the Email Program

  • The Configuration is carried out automatically when using the following programs:
    • Thunderbird (later deselect the checkbox "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages" under "Tools → Account Settings→ Server Settings → Advanced"
    • Outlook 2016 (only Windows)
    • Claws Mail
    • GNOME Online Accounts (for Evolution)
    • KMail
  • For other programs, please use the following settings:
    • General:
      • Email address: Login-Name@physik.hu-berlin.de or Firstname.Lastname @physik.hu-berlin.de
    • Incoming Server:
      • Protocol: IMAP
      • Server: imap.physik.hu-berlin.de
      • Port: 993
      • SSL: SSL
      • Login method: password
      • Username: Login name (without @physik.hu-berlin.de for example mmuster)
    • Outgoing Server:
      • Protocol: SMTP
      • Server: smtp.physik.hu-berlin.de
      • Port: 587
      • SSL: StartTLS
      • Login method: password
      • Username: Login name (without @physik.hu-berlin.de, for example mmuster)
  • Due to new firewall rules, the sending of e-mails is only possible via port 587 (Submission). If it is not possible to send emails, please check your settings!
  • For security reasons, the insecure connection to the mail server is not possible.
  • Attention: Please use the above account settings of your email program for Incoming Server and Outgoing Server. The old server mail.physik.hu-berlin.de will be switched off at the end of the winter semester 2017/18.
  • Recommendation:
    • We recommend using a current email program. A working email program should already be installed on most current operating systems. If this is not the case, we recommend Thunderbird for all common desktop operating systems.
    • If possible, use the IMAP protocol. Your emails and folders remain on the server and you see the same mailboxes from all PCs and mobile devices.
    • When using the POP3 protocol, a copy of the emails is created on the client PC so that they are available offline (without Internet connection). Select the checkbox "Leave Messages on server", otherwise the emails are deleted from the server after copying and are no longer available for IMAP clients.
    • We do not offer support for the POP3 protocol anymore. We are planning to deactivate it at some indefinite future date.
    • Please care for your Mailbox and remove unnecessary emails from your mailbox. Even without any intended restrictions on this question, non-delivery of e-mails may occur.
