A balloon-borne 4.75 THz-heterodyne receiver to probe atomic oxygen in the atmosphere

We present a heterodyne receiver concept for sounding atomic oxygen in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere from a stratospheric balloon. The receiver is based on a hot-electron bolometer mixer and a quantum cascade laser as local oscillator. It probes the ground state transition of atomic oxygen at 4.75 THz.
